Disney's 52nd feature length movie stars a video game villain, Ralph (voiced by John C Reilly), who wants to be a hero. He then sets out to fulfill his dream, but his quest brings havoc to the whole arcade where he lives. Exciting, funny, and deeply touching at times, the film won the Best Animated Feature award at the Critics Choice Awards and the National Board of Review Awards - it has also been nominated for the same award at the Oscars.

The extremely foxy Jennifer Lawrence gives yet another outstanding performance in The Hunger Games as Katniss Everdeen. Set in dystopian America, Katniss voluntarily takes her younger sister's place in the Hunger Games, a televised fight to the death in which two teenagers from each of the twelve Districts of Panem are chosen at random to compete. The success of the film is its ability to make us care about the characters in a situation completely alien to our own.

Denzel Washington returns to form as an airline pilot saves a flight from crashing, but an investigation into the malfunctions reveals something troubling about the pilot's private life. Director Zemeckis returns to live action after dabbling into the world of animation. The film received two Academy Award nominations - Best Actor for Washington and Best Original Screenplay for its script.

Brave

This may not be one of Pixar's best, but it still hit the right notes. Determined to make her own path in life, Princess Merida defies a custom that brings chaos to her kingdom. Granted one wish, Merida must rely on her bravery and her archery skills to undo a beastly curse. Brave has already won the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature and is hot favourite to pinch the Oscar for the same award.
